Solo Adventure 551 days Overland Across 40 Countries Interviewing with travelog Writer Queenie

In a continuous journey spanning over 500 days, Queenie decided from the very beginning to travel alone. She explains that solo travel means she doesn’t have to consult with any companions; she can rely entirely on her own desires to explore so-called “axis of evil” countries and venture into closed nations, disconnecting from all social media.

Her trip to Bhutan inspired her with the local culture and travel experiences. Queenie resolutely quit her job to embark on a journey around the world. She realized that a simple life is the happiest. After returning to Hong Kong, she repeatedly reflected on her priorities in life, gradually embracing minimalism, and ultimately decided to leave everything behind in Hong Kong.

The 551 days were not a journey that could be taken on a whim. Before setting off, Queenie mapped out her initial route by reading travel journals, but the sheer volume of information made it impossible to get everything from a single book or website. Instead, she had to look up other travelers’ experiences along the way, relying on online tools to navigate language barriers, transportation, and accommodation issues. She even included a special chapter in her book about preparing for long-distance travel, sharing the supplies and mindset needed beforehand.

Facing challenges alone made Queenie—who appears delicate but is internally strong—more independent. Originally lacking a sense of direction, she successfully navigated 40 countries using her smartphone, earning various traveler badges along the way. The limited space in her luggage taught her that a person’s needs are actually minimal; “just enough” is sufficient. “The world is vast, and human potential is even greater.” She learned to love herself, live in the moment, and trust that her passion for exploring the corners of the world would sustain her until she could no longer continue.

Queenie emphasizes the importance of staying safe while traveling alone. She prefers to dress modestly and always carries a small bag containing her identification and cash. She also prepares backup cash, a mini flashlight, a whistle, and a personal safety alarm; avoids going out at night; and chooses daytime transportation to arrive at new destinations. Additionally, she remains alert when meeting new friends to ensure her safety while traveling.

During her journey, Queenie met many new friends, the most special being a lively and well-maintained woman from Hong Kong in her sixties. After retiring, this woman had traveled the world for over twenty years, and the two of them explored multiple countries together. Queenie found that her stories and wisdom enriched her travels. However, life is unpredictable; the woman passed away suddenly due to illness not long after. Her openness and gratitude while battling her illness taught Queenie the importance of living in the moment.

The Original Intention of Writing a Book

Inspired by the seed of an idea to publish a book, Queenie developed the habit of documenting her experiences during her travels. Unfortunately, her journey was interrupted by the pandemic, and the busyness of life after returning to Hong Kong put her publishing plans on hold. However, six months ago, Queenie reignited her determination and overcame the challenge of not knowing how to type. She repeatedly revised her articles by hand, ultimately fulfilling the expectations of her younger self. “There are always more solutions than difficulties.” Even if the path is winding, those with ambition can achieve their dreams.

For her future journeys, she has many plans in the works. In addition to budgeting and scheduling, she is also preparing herself mentally and physically for new adventures. These include the entire 10,000-kilometer Trans-Siberian Railway; the mysterious countries along the 30th parallel, such as Egypt, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and India; the Kora trek around Mount Kailash at an altitude of 6,000 meters; a 30-day cargo ship journey across the Atlantic to Central and South America; and an overland trip through Africa, among others.

In a world filled with turmoil and the noise of urban life, can we find happiness by connecting with our inner selves? This book is “for those who love to travel and for those who want to live happily.” Through her solo journey, Queenie discovered a lifestyle defined by simplicity, balance, openness, and freedom. She encourages readers to embrace life’s unpredictability and to boldly pursue their dreams.
